I was particularly moved when Ed Merrin spoke from the heart about JDC and shared his firm belief that in tough economic times, leaders lead.
I was particularly moved when Ed Merrin spoke from the heart about JDC and shared his firm belief that in tough economic times, leaders lead. Ed significantly increased his Annual Board Fund gift, as did Irv Smokler, Nancy Grand, Jacky Schimmel, Andrew Tisch, and other lay leaders during or just before this meeting. History was repeating itself before my very eyes, I thought, and the good deeds of the past were being repeated tenfold, for during JDC’s 95 year history, it has been leaders among our Board members who have made it possible for JDC to help impoverished Jews survive two World Wars and the Great Depression. And with the Board and staff’s help, we will survive this particular period of history as well and, as always, we will come out stronger.

Ed Merrin's Flower Arrangements

An avid philanthropist, Ed Merrin also devotes a lot of his time on flower arrangements and garden design. “The New York Botanic Gardens is publishing a book on the arrangement of flowers by Ed Merrin with photos by Ismael Ramirez. This volume will be the start of a series of publications. It will be available in August 2011, to hit book stores for the full run for the Christmas season 2011.”

Edward Merrin Presents Gleaming Jewelry From Three Eras - New York Times

Ever wished to know what it would have felt like to be Cleopatra? In November 1987, the Merrin Gallery, directed by Edward Merrin, held an exhibit on wearable ancient jewelry from the ancient and pre-Columbian Columbia. (Pun intended.) Edward Merrin was the lead of the show, and he told the New York Times:

“Even in antiquity gold was precious and was used sparingly,” Mr. Merrin said. “The finest artisans have always used gold in sheets as heavy as was necessary for the object. In these works, what one chooses is the elegance of form - not the weight of the material. Jewelry made heavy with gold can be vulgar.”
